Recently I had the pleasure of attending the performance of Ish Amitoj’s The Ugly Buckling at Chabot College. The play highlighted the pertinent issue of bullying and was handled sensitively by Ish. The actors ranged from the ages of 5 to 25 and each one of them is worth noting for their impressive performances. Bullying and its ramifications for the victim, their family, and the bully were brought to the forefront with great care and expertise by the director and cast. The play takes the audience through a gamut of emotions and I laughed and cried through it with young and old spectators alike. Creator Ish Amitoj has put together an amazing production with smooth scene changes, a clear focus, and cohesiveness that is both entertaining and educational. The costumes and lighting were appropriate to the nature of the play and enhanced the emphasis on the topic of bullying to the fullest. I encourage everyone to see the play for its focus on such an important issue. As an educator myself, I recognize and applaud the ability and power of theater in bringing important social issues such as bullying, to the forefront. Hats off to Ish for taking a step in the right direction with The Ugly Buckling.

A good teacher can make almost any story interesting and Ish did exactly that in her play the “Ugly Buckling” Ish’s diligence, thorough and imaginative writing and acting abilities; she brought the play to a whole new professional level. The story opens to larger matters with a great message sent out to the audience. The “Ugly Buckling” was a real reminder of the pain and excitement of growing up and how to overcome the hot topic in schools of “Bullying.” Ish combines a disciplined plan with effective measures and various tactical plans to increase student concentration, participation and progress student accountability. Overall, our experience working with Ish was incredible; my daughter was always excited about attending classes. Ish routinely met with the students’ parents regarding in class issues and learning interruptions to discuss positive solutions.
